If you stumbled across this article chances are you have or are currently experiencing issues with a frozen view counter on YouTube. Since July, this has been a common problem for some of our clients as well. Fortunately there’s a quick and easy fix!

This bug in particular affects the main view counter on the video page, and prevents the counter from updating properly even after refreshing the page. We can all thank the kind folks at YouTube for this little contribution that has gone unresolved as long as it has. That being said, this does appear to be a browser related issue.

Whether this is related to how the page is cached or something else entirely, following these few steps will fix a stuck view counter on YouTube:

  1. Go to the video page on YouTube

  2. Like/Unlike the video

  3. Wait a few seconds

  4. Refresh the page

Fix a stuck view counter on YouTube

That’s it! Your video’s counter should show the current view count and update correctly. Don’t forget to like your video again if it was removed to fix the counter, we all know how important likes are!

If your video counter is still stuck try again and give step three a bit more time. After running through these steps for a second time, if the counter is still frozen your video will forever have the same number of views.

Just kidding! From time to time YouTube’s AI performs algorithmic audits which can also slow down, pause, or even temporarily remove views from a counter. In this case nothing can be done and you just need to be patient. Typically this process is completed in less than 24 hours, but we have seen some videos with frozen counters for as long as 72 hours in very rare cases.

We’re hopeful this bug is resolved in the near future, but if not at least you’ll know how to fix a stuck view counter on YouTube!
